The Buck Tobacco Sponsorship project has developed materials for use in local community advertising and media advocacy campaigns. The community advertising and news media strategies are combined in a coordinated effort to support local policy efforts. One of our most requested documents is the media advocacy guide shown at the right (click to view).

The media advocacy campaign materials and training developed by the Berkeley Media Studies Group (BMSG) support local policy efforts to address tobacco sponsorship at rodeos and bar nights. Local advocates use the materials to build relationships with reporters and write letters to the editor, op-ed pieces, press releases, etc. with the goal of re-framing coverage of tobacco industry behavior by local media. BMSG developed its materials with the assistance of local-level tobacco control advocates.

The community ads support local advocates' efforts to involve community members in changing policies that encourage and permit tobacco sponsorship of rodeos and bar nights. Except where otherwise noted, Public Media Center (PMC) designed the ads, with the guidance of local-level tobacco control experts.

The report Bucking Tobacco Sponsorship at Rodeos: Strategies for Media Advocacy and Public Engagement, prepared by BMSG and PMC, describes strategic ways to use the media advocacy and community advertising materials as part of a policy campaign to eliminate tobacco sponsorship of rodeos and bar nights. The publication includes sample letters to the editor, op-ed pieces, press releases, worksheets, and other materials for use in the development of media advocacy strategies.

Below are links to samples of the print and radio ads prepared by PMC for the Buck Tobacco Sponsorship project. A television ad was also produced; for further information about the TV ad, send an email to: admin@bucktobacco.org.
