To work with the California Rodeo Salinas to
adopt a policy stating that they will not accept tobacco company
sponsorship or advertising at the Rodeo.
The California Salinas Rodeo
The is ranked among the top 15 of nearly 800 rodeos
sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association being the
largest rodeo in California. Aside from benefiting local businesses
in the City of Salinas, the Rodeo contributes money to local service
clubs, schools and charities. In addition to the altruistic contributions
encouraging community involvement, the Rodeo Association offers
these organizations an opportunity to participate in concessions,
program sales, parking and several other rodeo-related activities.
Most events held at the Salinas Sports Complex
are Family events. Tobacco product advertising and promotions detract
from the family environment by tempting children to engage in behaviors
that are against the law. Tobacco advertisements that appeal to
minors undermine state and local laws prohibiting the sale or distribution
of tobacco products to minors.
The Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Monterey County
recognizes the Rodeo as a very important part of our community and
values the steps that the Rodeo is taking by adopting a policy that
addresses tobacco use on their premises. The Rodeo has not received
tobacco sponsorship since 1996. However, they have not yet signed
a policy that excludes tobacco sponsorship. If in the future the
Rodeo follows the current movement as other Rodeos in the state,
then they will honor what has been their practice for the past eight
years concerning tobacco sponsorship.
To work with bars and clubs in the area to adopt
policies stating that they will not solicit nor accept any tobacco-related
sponsorship or advertising of activities or events, nor allow
the distribution of free tobacco products or promotional items
identified with a tobacco company or brand on their premises.
Restaurants and Bars
The tobacco industry often sponsors Tobacco Bar
Nights. These events often feature entertainment and distribution
of free samples encouraging people to smoke, chew or snuff tobacco
products. Although this might give the impression of a great free
package, for a business owner, there are other more serious reasons
why the tobacco industry sponsors bar nights. The tobacco industry
is after merchandising potential as well as opportunities for promotions
in the community. The tobacco industry wishes to form a good and
positive image by being linked with any establishment that provides
opportunities to contact a youthful crowd. Therefore, addicting
a new generation by promoting the only product that is intended
to kill its costumer.
We are happy to share that four more establishments
have added to the growing number of businesses who willingly signed
policies prohibiting tobacco sponsorship at their premises.
