Organizers of this year’s Poway Rodeo are pledging to
go tobacco-free, even when it comes to sponsorship
money.
Rodeo Chairman Russ Sheldon has confirmed that
Pro-Rodeo Productions of Poway Inc., the group that
organizes the Poway Rodeo, will not accept support from
cigarette or smokeless tobacco companies.
Rodeo Spokesman Joe Biggers acknowledged Tuesday that
the group’s new anti-tobacco stance will mean a
“substantial amount of monetary loss,” but that the
group is looking to make up for the loss elsewhere.
Pro-Rodeo is working in conjunction with the American
Lung Association to solidify an agreement between the
two parties that will make the popular community event
even more family-friendly.
“We support the goal of the American Lung Association
to educate people on the risks of tobacco,” Biggers
said, noting that Pro-Rodeo Productions of Poway Inc. is
looking forward to establishing an excellent partnership
with the ALA.
The Poway Rodeo previously had a longstanding
relationship with U.S. Smokeless Tobacco, which has
provided prize money and manned a sponsorship booth,
where company representatives handed out gifts to adult
rodeo-goers.
This year’s Poway Rodeo, which is scheduled for Sept.
24, 25 and 26, will mark the annual event’s 32nd year.
Many other organized affairs surround the rodeo each
year, including Poway’s Community Days parade and fair,
a barbecue, trail ride and kick-off party at a local
restaurant and bar.
Adding to the family-friendly atmosphere is the
Mutton Bustin’ and Junior Barrel racing that cater to
children.
Pro-Rodeo Productions of Poway consists of the Poway
Rodeo Volunteers’ Committee and the Poway Valley Rider’s
Association. The local rodeo is sanctioned by the
Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association and the Women’s
Professional Rodeo Association. |
