The League Against Spit Sponsorship at Our rodeo (LASSO)

Help us clean up our rodeo!

The Cal Poly Rodeo is an integral part of the campus community, as well as the San Luis Obispo community at large. At the end of the collegiate rodeo season, those riders who have performed exceptionally well throughout the season are invited to participate in the College National Rodeo Finals. Cal Poly riders who perform well at the Finals are the recipients of a certain amount of scholarship money depending upon how well they compete. Unfortunately, this money comes from US Smokeless Tobacco. Historically, US Smokeless Tobacco has been an important contributor to the rodeo; however, the association of this deadly substance with a positive athletic event such as the rodeo is inappropriate.

The League Against Spit Sponsorship at Our rodeo (LASSO) is a project committed to assisting the Cal Poly Rodeo in replacing the scholarship money awarded by US Smokeless Tobacco with money from a more positive source. Last year, the Cal Poly Rodeo was awarded nearly $10,000 from US Smokeless Tobacco for exceptional performance at the College National Finals, and Coach Bret Black feels that this year's rodeo team is even stronger. This is where you can help! LASSO would like to match the money awarded by US Smokeless Tobacco with scholarship money from more positive sources to ensure that the rodeo participants do not have to be involved in sport, or the Cal Poly campus, associated with US Smokeless Tobacco.

including scholarships, adopted by the California State Student Association, the official voice of the California State University (CSU) student body. The resolution was presented to the CSU Board of Trustees for consideration in March 2005; if adopted, it will apply to all CSU campuses.
