The Stanislaus County Health Services Agency Tobacco Education Program has been the Local Lead Agency in Tobacco Control since the inception of Proposition 99. Staff have been successful in working with community partners to successfully adopt some of the following policies:

  • Stanislaus County Sheriff's Posse Rodeo (PRCA) no tobacco sponsorship policy
  • Stanislaus County Fair outdoor tobacco free area policy
  • Stanislaus County Children and Families First Commission no tobacco sponsorship policy in RFP's
  • Brenden Theater smoke-free theater entrance policy
  • Stanislaus County Health Services Agency Outdoor Smoking Policy adopted

Over the past four years, the Stanislaus County Local Lead Agency staff (LLA) have observed an increase in the amount of tobacco industry related activities at the rodeo. In April 2000, UST presence primarily consisted of banners in the rodeo arena and recognition in the program guide. One year later, the UST scoreboard was added to the venue. In April 2002, a Project Smart Money event observation documented the following: a Skoal/Copenhagen adult sampling tent with mechanical bull, the Scoreboard, and placement of arena banners.

It is understood that adopting a no tobacco industry sponsorship policy is a long-term goal; however, it is the intent of this project to work with the community and the Oakdale Saddle Club to adopt incremental changes at a minimum including elimination of adult sampling venues and/or outdoor tobacco advertising.
